About the Event
Suzhou is quite the destination when it comes to shopping for pearls. Join Janny Chyn from Shanghai Pathways for a trip to the Suzhou Pearl Market. This sprawling market on the outskirts of the city is widely acknowledged as the largest market in China for freshwater pearls. The market encompasses several buildings housing hundreds of small booths that represent different companies that make their business in pearls. Prices are extremely low—in fact, so low that we don’t even bother trying to bargain. You’ll find pearls of all shapes and sizes at the market, and if you like, you can even get the vendors to custom-make some pearl accessories for you. We will meet the best vendor at the market who will teach us about the different quality of pearls, and we will really know whether the pearls for sale are fake. In addition to the market trip, we will also see and learn about the process of pearl harvesting at the nearby farm.
