About the Event
For our ongoing 2024–2025 SEA series, Survey of Art in China, we will explore the art of the Great Proletariat period from the 1960s to the 1980s. Amid competing forces, the Communists, led by Chairman Mao, championed the use of contemporary visual culture to actively recruit and engage the public.
This sit-down session will trace the precedence of paper-based images in China’s art history and examine the ways in which traditional and cultural methods were appropriated to unite a common cause. The bold images that were emblematic of China’s nationalism still continue to be defined and refined today.
