About the Event
Jade carving remains one of the most treasured and elusive of all Chinese art. The use of jade for creating objects of ritual and adornment dates back five millennia in China. Known and appreciated throughout Chinese history (and even pre-history) for their beauty and associated with spiritual, ritualistic, and historical meaning, jade carvings are difficult to fully appreciate through books or prints. They need to be held in the hand and examined up close to reveal their tactile qualities and refined details of artistry that make them so desirable.
The collector Flora will share her insights into jade, bringing along some of her collection to show first-hand what to appreciate and how to look at jade to determine its value. The session will be moderated by Janny Chyn from Shanghai Pathways, a platform that engages with people to learn and understand Shanghai through unique cultural and art activities.
