About the Event

This rare event at the Yuz Museum in Shanghai brings together two important topics for discussion: 1) the relevancy of paintings in today’s society and 2) a closer look into the workings by a Chinese contemporary artist, particularly from a female point of view. The globally-acclaimed Shi Zhiying has been invited by the Yuz Museum to hold her solo exhibition entitled “Stones and Stories” lasting from March 22 to June 16, 2024. Known for her repetitive brushstrokes and themes centering on accumulations, the Shanghai-born artist Shi Zhiying has been featured in major museum group and solo exhibitions in the United States, Europe, and Australia as well as in China. In this intimate artist talk, held privately for SEA and moderated by the Art Historian Julie Chun, we will hear from the Chinese contemporary artist about her inspirations, her painting process, and how paintings can still remain relevant in a global society dominated by digital art forms.
