About the Event
Today’s People’s Square was once the Shanghai Race Course, the physical center of the city and the focus of much activity for affluent expatriates living in formerly segregated Shanghai. This walk, led by Historic Shanghai’s Patrick Cranley, will circle most of the perimeter of the former race course and include an introduction to the collection at the (air-conditioned!) Shanghai History Museum. Along the way, we will see and discuss some of the landmarks around the race course, including the Sun Sun Department Store, one of Shanghai’s “Big Four” emproriums; the Grand, Yangtze and Park hotels, among the city’s most elegant; Moore Memorial Methodist Church, designed by Shanghai’s most celebrated 1930’s architect; and the Great World Entertainment Center, once a den of iniquity run by Shaghai’s most infamous gangster. Join us for the fun, and the history!
