About the Event
For our ongoing 2024–2025 SEA series Survey of Art in China, we will spend our afternoon in an off-the-beaten-path museum, which was the former site of an orphanage and a craft school. It was in this very place that the rigid formalism of ink painting underwent a shift toward modernism. What does it mean for Chinese art to become “modern”? Join Julie Chun, adjunct Professor of Art History, for an insightful study of how and why this artistic shift occurred in our very own city of Shanghai.
