For our third session in the art history series Survey of Art in China, we will explore the fascinating world of ancient bronze cultures during China’s Shang and Zhou dynasties. This intriguing lecture will examine the emergence, development, and eventual decline of the prominent bronze vessels that played an important role in early Chinese societies. We will also discuss why bronze material culture has been, and continues to be, so significant in understanding the societies, beliefs, and traditions of China, both past and present.

By completing this session and gaining a deeper historical context, you will be better prepared to understand the circumstances in which bronze objects were created, used, and valued. This background will also enrich your experience when viewing these remarkable objects in museums, not only in China but also in collections of Asian art around the world.
