About the Event
Join us for a day trip to the city of Suzhou. The city is well protected with large moats and designed with a grid pattern of roads which were linked together by a network of bridged rivers. We will learn about Suzhou’s many distinct features: streets in front of houses and canals and rivulets in the back; numerous bridges connecting the streets on two sides; hundreds of bridges of different shapes, sizes, and colors, which led to the city being referred to as the “Venice of the Orient.” Not too long ago, people could fetch water from the canals and rivulets by just opening their back doors. Vegetables, grain, and other foods were once carried to the doors of every house through these canals. The “Venice of the Orient” tour is the compressed highlights tour. We will visit Tiger Hill, the 500-year-old Humble Administrator’s Garden, and take a boat ride on the Grand Canal. The last highlight will be to visit Pingjiang Street. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant near the canal, and we will also have time to shop at the number one silk spinning mill.
