About the Event
Sichuan Road extended all the way from the southern boundary of the International Settlement (now Yan’an Road) out into the countryside north of Hongkou District. While technically Chinese territory, North Sichuan Road was considered one of the “External Roads,” a kind of unofficial extention of the Foreign Settlements, where new Chinese arrivals in Shanghai mixed with Western missionaries and Japanese families looking for economic opportunity. In the 1920s and 30s, this area was home to many leftist writers and artists whose ideas the Nationalist government of Chiang Kai-shek tried to brutally suppress. Today we can still find traces of these groups among the high-rises that are rapidly changing the face of Hongkou. Join us on this informative walk with Patrick Cranley of Historic Shanghai to uncover the secrets of North Sichuan Road.
