Duolun Road: War of the Words
Time & Location
About the Event
On May 4, 1919 a student-led movement protesting the Treaty of Versailles resulted in a growing wave of social and literary creativity. With a growing interest in Communism, one element crucial to its success was literature that could be understood by commoners. Many Shanghai writers poured out their hopes and dreams while living in relative secrecy in the affordable Hongkou district. Duolun Road’s iconic cultural street showcases what this period meant to these young idealists. We will hear the stories of China’s most iconic ‘left-wing’ writers, be inspired by notable architecture, and test our knowledge of western writers at scenic Luxun Park.
