About the Event
The Jade Buddha Temple, built in 1882, is the most famous Zen school Buddhist temple in Shanghai. It hosts two jade Buddha statues imported to Shanghai from Myanmar by sea: a sitting Buddha (1.95 meters tall, 3 tons), and a smaller reclining Buddha representing the Buddha's death.
You will start the tour with a guide in the first building known as the Mountain Gate. Here you will see the famous happy Buddha. Next you will visit the Guanyin Hall and Grand Hall. Along the way, you will learn about Chinese Buddhism and history of the temple. Finally, you will visit the Jade Buddha room. You only see the Jade Buddha outside of a fence.
After your selected temple visit, you will see how the temple stores their meditation tea. This area is not open to the public. Afterwards, you will go to a private tea room for a traditional Chinese tea tasting where you have the chance to sample some special temple tea. At the end of your visit, you can transcribe Buddhist Scriptures, which will bring good luck to you and your family.
If there is enough interest, the tour can be led with a temple monk for an additional cost, advanced interest must be noted on the event RSVP.
This temple monk led tour will show you a different side to the temple including areas not acceisble to the public. The monk will broadly explain why the Guanyin Buddha (Compassion Buddha) is so popular in China. He will also teach us the right way to show respect to the Buddha with incense. Finally, the monk will escort you into the Jade Buddha room to add oil to the lamp in the front of the Jade Buddha and see ancient Buddhist scriptures
