Pilates and Functional Movement
Time & Location
About the Event
Injuries can be caused by incorrect movements. You may think that injuries are suffered by the accident-stricken or those with severe body pathology, but that is not always the case. While we may be living an active life doing our favorite sports, injuries can be compounded over time as our body under- or over-performs. Injuries can also be caused by repetitive motion.
This workshop is comprised of three parts. In the first two parts, we will look at common injuries that happen due to incorrect movement patterns in seven types of sports or exercises. In the third part, we will look at daily postural patterns and how we adapt our movements such as sitting, walking, and standing.
We will look closely at how we complete our movements by either under-recruiting or over-recruiting certain muscle groups, starting with these four exercises or sports.
Gym: excessive muscle contraction in weight training
Golf: rotational inclination in one direction
Running: incongruence in the lower extremity joints
Cycling: shortening of the anterior body
Upon understanding these imbalances, we will practice the right Pilates and functional movements.
You don’t need to be a fitness buff to attend this workshop. Knowledge takes us far in helping us improve our understanding of human anatomy and ultimately, ourselves. The exercises are beneficial to us all. For example, we may not be a marathon runner but we might still have lower extremity misalignment and learning the correct movement can still be useful.
