About the Event

Despite a vibrant photography art scene, very few foreigners (including those residing in China) can name one single famous Chinese photographer. And fewer yet can name the wide expanse of younger photography and image-based artists born in the 1990s and 2000s.

To shed insight, Art Historian Julie Chun will hold a curator talk with Shanghai’s foremost scholar and expert of photographic art. Independent Curator SHI Hantao has held numerous artistic and advisory roles, including as the Chief Coordinator of the 2018 Shanghai Biennale, Artistic Director of the Ray Art Center, and has curated numerous photography and video exhibitions throughout China.

With a pulse to the latest emerging local art scene, Shi Hantao has selected 20 Chinese artists or groups for “The First Annual Exhibition of Chinese Contemporary and Photography and Video Arts”.

Julie Chun has been studying this exhibition and both agrees and questions Hantao’s selection. Please join us in this interactive curator-guided museum talk as we want…
