About the Event

In the immense entrance hall of the Power Station of Art (PSA), an imposing tower arises out of an airplane. This spectacular installation is by the Chinese female artist Yin Xiuzhen. Who is she and why is she important?

Tracing back in time to a critical juncture in Chinese art history, Julie Chun (Adjunct Professor of Art History) will provide the historical circumstances that provided the context for the emergence of contemporary art in China. When the field was dominated by male artists, female artists had little opportunities to cultivate, let alone showcase, their creative talent. Yet, a small number of women artists participated – most of whom fell away, while a tiny fraction of artists such as Yin Xiuzhen not only stayed persistent but, more importantly, relevant.

Please join us for a most intriguing and inspiring discussion on the status of women artists in today’s Chinese contemporary art…
