The Muslim Market and Jade Buddha temple
Time & Location
About the Event
During the Qing dynasty reign of Emperor Guang Xu, a Buddhist monk from Mount Putuo went on a pilgrimage to Tibet and Burma. While there, he was gifted with two jade Buddha statues that were transported by sea back to Shanghai. The monk had a temple built with donated funds, and died shortly thereafter. These precious statues were carved with rare white jade, and viewing them will leave you contemplating transcendence. With Shanghai and Beyond, we will tour the mysteries of the Jade Buddha temple, and also visit the bustling Muslim market while learning about the ethnic group’s social and culinary influence in Shanghai.
