About the Event

During the Cultural Revolution, millions of youth from large cities were sent to rural areas to work the land in an effort to improve rural economies. Some of them eventually made their way back to their homes, and some never did. This "rustication" program known as ZhiQing changed millions of families' lives in China, and many still feel the consequences decades later. Lisa Zhu will take us to a museum dedicated to the ZhiQing youth, tucked away in a cemetery on the outskirts of Shanghai. We will also hear the story of Lisa's own family, one of the millions affected. On the way, we will also enjoy a scenic stop at the East China Sea temple, where Shanghai's mother river meets the East China Sea. Come join us for a day learning this fascinating story and enjoying a breath of fresh sea air.
